The Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires school districts that receive federal Title I funding to notify parents of their right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct their child. As a recipient of these funds, the William P. Gorman Fort Banks School will provide you with this information in a timely manner if you request it. Specifically, you have the right to request the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:
- Whether the teacher meets the state qualifications and licensing criteria for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.
- Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or provisional status because of special circumstances.
- The teacher’s college major, whether the teacher has any advanced degrees, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.
- Whether paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if so, their qualifications.
The Gorman Fort Banks School has been identified for improvement in English Language under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) for both aggregate and subgroups. While this designation is based on the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) data of the Cummings School, it does not indicate a failing school. It does however highlight areas where more work is needed by principals, teachers and parents to ensure that all students are successful. Schools identified under NCLB become eligible for additional support from the school district and state as they work together to improve teaching and learning, especially in English language arts and mathematics.
We are doing many things to improve teaching and learning in our school including the following:
- implemented a Response to Intervention (RtI) instructional model that capitalizes on the unique learning needs of students;
- established flexible reading support groups and regularly assess reading skills in kindergarten through grade 2 students in order to identify the neediest students for reading support services and classroom intervention strategies;
- regularly assess math skills in grade 1 and 2 students with follow up data analysis meeting to review instructional approaches and revise curriculum;
- enhance a co-taught/”push-in” model to instructing our English Language Learners;
- planning workshops to help parents understand and support their child mathematically;
- re-examine our school improvement plan.
Involving families as full partners in the education of their children is a cornerstone of NCLB. When families support learning, children are more successful in school and school success helps children become successful adults. There are a variety of ways we invite your involvement. Please consider the following in particular:
- take advantage of the activities on our school website that support learning;
- participate in parent teacher conferences;
- become involved as a volunteer;
- attend our school site council meetings; and
- check your child’s backpack daily.
